Wow-I love this thing.>>>ur2.pl/855 I was actually using a weed wacker and shears and then saw someone using one of these, I'm not exactly a gardener, ha. This is great at chopping stuff down if you don't like to weed, which I don't. Not in Florida in August, no way.
If you're getting lots of broken string try soaking it in water. Sometimes the stuff gets brittle in dry weather. I store mine in a plastic bucket and throw in a damp sponge and it seems to help.
I am on my second Tanaka head and like this head better than any I have tried. One thing I found however is that the space between the head and weedeater body is large and is a weed wrap point. I simply cut a piece of pvc pipe to close that gap up and no more weed wrap. The head with the "dogs" you showed that grab the string work best with round string but lose their ability to hold any string after a period of time. just as you mentioned.
I finally stepped the game up with an Ariens ST622. O M G !!! This machine is awesome. It cuts so much faster and much tougher and more dense weeds. Russian Thistle was the catalyst. I have two shindawa trimmers but the 6 Hp wheeled trimmer is outrageous. Stop screwing around and get the machine for the job. I wish I had done it years ago. I read the post about soaking the line in water 48 hours…. I could store the line in water lol I've got to try that too.
Very nice job you whooped what you had to whoop. You would love my Fs 250 R trimmer/brush cutter. It is one unstoppable beast. String is good for the fence lines and house. Got two saw blades and a three point brush knife. Its a beast with its 40.2 cc engine.
Have you tried soaking the poly blades and trimmer line in water for 48 hours and I it makes the sthil trimmer line and any line stupid strong I have been cutting 1-3in thick weeds on .95 line!!!!
So it's now been 3+ years since you posted this video. How's the Tanaka head holding up? Are you still as excited about it? I need to get rid of my factory head and replace it with something that will hold .155 cutting cord. Is this head "still" the head to use? Comments please.
PS: someone asked why not use metal line. Good idea (I think). Does SS metal cord work even better? Pro's & Con's?
I might use a blade on my Shindaiwa to cut brush like that. One thing I really like about my Shindaiwa is that it has 4 lines not 2. I think 2 would drive me crazy. With 4, if 1 breaks you can still work with 3, but with 2 if 1 breaks you need to stop.
I found it to be very easy just to run my Kubota ZG227La 60" Zero Turn Mower over small stuff like this in the place of wasting time with my Weed Eater but when I do get into heavy over growth and I can not see what my be in it I use Oregon Gator Line .095, It has a Steel Wire inside of it and it cuts stuff as High as my Knees and I am 6' 6" tall, I am not saying this is not a good product but 1 string at a time is a waste of time for me personally when you have as much to keep up as I do.
I too have discovered the joys of .155 string , super heavy duty . I use it in my Echo GT225 rapid-loader . The weight slows it down a bit so you have to cut the string an inch or so shorter to compensate . I just did 600 feet of ditch banks with heavy grass and reeds on one string change. Make sure you have the type of head that accepts .155 and .135 , mine spits .105 right back out.
I'm using the "Ugly Head" which is based on the same principle as the Pivotrim but has 3 slots instead of 4 and uses 0.095 line. It's been about two weeks of use (probably about 3 hours worth of actual string-ground contact) and I've only had to replace the line twice. Works marvelously for edging yards. I've even done many of my neighbor's yards with this thing, and let me tell you their curbs were VERY rough, with thick overgrowth of crab grass and dirt. This thing will breaks through no prob.
Pivotrim is for grass. That head and its little eyelets would get destroyed in thick brush and wouldn't cut anything. Tanaka with a thick 0.130+ line is the ultimate setup. I got the same and it rips through brush like nothing else, except perhaps a saw blade.
I would recommend using a machette on the woody saplings or a hedge trimmer. Or, better yet, just run over it with a lawn mower set at the highest setting. A lawn mower is faster, less noisy, and less hassle. Just make sure there are no rocks to hit.

With that first head…put the string and tie a knot on the string and pull it back out. It won't fall out…
Stihl DuroCut 20-2, works great on that 90R
YOU WERE HOLDING THAT THING LIKE A LIVE MOUSETRAP AFTER YOU GOT THE SPRING IN!!
lol
THAT WAS FRIGGIN FUNNY.
GOOD VID

Zip tie both ends.. maybe thats a solution..
What size was the washer you added?
Where did you get the right thread thingy you replaced it with?
Husqvarna t35 and 525ls, the ultimate combo

Don`t mind me saying… you sound like Ray Romano 🙂 . Good video shows everything.
One Word: "ROUNDUP"

Or just a brush cutter kit? They make them for the fs90r

get a tri arc metal brush cutter blade and be done.

Why not a piece of steel cable the same diameter as the string ?
Just surfing the web, very helpful info, job well done, Thank You!
Then why in the hell would you a weed set up to cut brush? This all has to be a joke
Great video and install but why in the hell did you not read instructions and research before doing a video. Just sayin.

i like the grass gator no twine and goes through everything
I might get one of those Tanaka heads, I'm getting tired of the bump bump and bump. Nice informative video – Helpful .. Thanks!
oops it's 0.105" line not 0.095"

I'm mostly using this maintaining trails in the woods. A lawnmower would be destroyed in no time – lots of rocks to hit.

Great video. Thanks.
Could you do a review of the Pivotrim? Concept sounds good. Supposedly less string breakage.
Thanks for posting! I'm sick of winding the trimmer string.
Stihl have heavy cutting "Brush knife" its called. It should to withstand.
I'd love to know how to put a chain on it and see how well it cuts everything (including grass).
